Book Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I managed to read three books over my Christmas break.  The last book I read in 2013 was The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.com:

Charlie is a freshman.

And while he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it.

Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But he can't stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I didn't hate this book, but I didn't love it either. The story is told in letters from the main character, Charlie, to an anonymous recipient. I didn't mind this format, but it definitely makes the story one sided as we only know Charlie's thoughts, feelings, and accounts of what is going on around him.

Charlie is incredibly awkward, and I found it easy to sympathize with him, though I'm not quite sure that I was so awkward or naïve at his age.

I would like to see the movie version. Because of my neutral feelings for this story, it is possible that the movie might actually be better than the book for once.

The movie is pretty excellent. It's also fun that it was filmed in Pittsburgh and they go out to eat at King's. : ) Plus, Emma Watson.

It took me two times reading this book to get a full grasp of the story. I think you have a point, that it might be because the story is only from Charlie's perspective.

I remember wanting to see this movie when it first came out but then I kind of forgot about it... Movies are rarely better than books in my opinion, but maybe this one would be!
