Ryder's Birth Story

Why, hello there!

Remember me?

I used to be a blogger.

Then I went and did this thing.

I had a baby.

And time has suddenly slipped away from me.  One minute I have a day ahead filled with promise, and the next thing I know, it's night time and nothing got accomplished.

Right now, I sit on my bed with a 3 month old asleep in his pack 'n' play at its foot, and I thought, I think I'll finally take some time to share the story of how this little boy was born.

So here goes...

Back in December, I shared the news that we were expecting.  Then in January, I was able to share that Baby was going to be a boy!  Then the wait for his arrival on May 25th began, but as always, things do not go as we planned.

On May 19th, my cousin, Tori was getting married.  Originally, I was supposed to be in the wedding, but due to a HUGE error by David's Bridal, I was not able to exchange my bridesmaid's dress for a larger size to accommodate my pregnant belly.  Tori still wanted me to be a part of some picture taking and asked if I could be at the venue early.  I readily agreed, glad that I could still have a special part in her day.

On Friday, May 19th in the very wee hours of the morning, I woke up with some cramp-like feelings. It was a little annoying but nothing major, so I went back to bed.  Around 10 AM, I was having the same feelings, and I called my doctor's office to be sure this was normal.  I told them that I thought I was having Braxton Hicks contractions.  I was instructed that all was in fact normal, and that if I got to a place where I couldn't walk or talk through the contractions to call back.

Scott and I got ready and headed out to the wedding venue in order to arrive by 2 P.M.  I was still dealing with cramping every now and then, but it was nothing I couldn't handle.  I took a few pictures with Tori and sat through a very lovely (and very HOT ceremony*).

*Seriously.  Earlier in the week, it had been in the 60s.  On this day, it was near 80 degrees.  My pregnant self nearly melted.

I was progressively feeling worse, but this was my cousin's wedding, and there was free food to be had!  ;)  So I pressed on.

Helping Tori bustle her gown after the ceremony, and looking MUCH happier than I felt.
We had dinner, and Scott and I left pretty soon after (around 8:30 P.M).  I just felt so awful.  Since he had been drinking, I drove home, and we went to bed.

Around midnight, I woke up from the cramping.  I thought if I changed positions I would be more comfortable so I went downstairs to try to arrange myself on the couch.  Scott came down a little later wondering where I was.  By this point, I had been tracking the contractions on my pregnancy app trying to make sense of it all.  They weren't coming at regular intervals.  Sometimes, I would go 10 minutes, and sometimes, only one or two in between.  Everything I read stated that they should come more often, get progressively stronger, and be relatively the same time apart.  When Scott had enough of me grabbing his ankle when one would come on, we called the doctor.

The doctor on call said to come in to the hospital to get checked out.  Of course, I hadn't had my hospital bag packed (though I had been planning to do it for weeks....).  Fortunately, most of my daily toiletries were in a backpack in our bedroom because we were remodeling our bathroom and I had been getting ready over the tub or at the kitchen sink while our other sink was out of commission.  So Scott gathered up a few things with the promise to come back for more later if we needed it.

On the way to the hospital, I was so worried that they would tell me to suck it up and stop being a wuss and send me home.  At this point, I was looking for relief from the pain, and I knew that if it wasn't time there wasn't anything they would do for me.  We arrived at the hospital around 2 A.M.

I was taken to a room, and they came in to examine me.

I was between 6 and 7 cm dilated.

Turns out, I am NOT a wuss.

And then I promptly requested my epidural.

I was definitely not a person who had a specific birth plan in mind.  My mindset was to deliver a healthy baby in any way necessary.  I was open to whatever needed to be done to ensure we were both happy and healthy.  The only thing Scott and I were not open to was the use of forceps to get him out.  I wanted to wait as long as I could before getting an epidural, and I was pretty proud of myself.

When they admitted me and got things started for pain relief, Scott called my parents.  My mom answered, and he told her I was in the hospital and the baby was on the way.  She said, "Ok," and hung up the phone on him.  A moment later, she called him right back. In the surprise of a phone call in the middle of the night, things didn't quite register with her right away!   She, my dad, and my brother got ready and arrived at the hospital.

My mom and Scott were able to stay with me as the time came to get down to business. It didn't take too long to get to 10 cm dilated and begin pushing.  I pushed for awhile, and though I was doing a good job (their words, not mine! haha), we weren't getting anywhere.  We agreed to let the doctor try to suction him out, which she tried twice.  That wasn't successful, and so I was taken to have a C-Section.

They got everything ready, and we got down to business (again) to deliver our baby boy.  Scott was able to be in the room, and very quickly, a beautiful baby boy was born!

Music Monday: Birthday Edition

Happy Labor Day!!

Tomorrow is my birthday!

A couple weeks ago, I shared the Top 5 hits from the year I started Kindergarten.  Today, I thought it would be fun to celebrate my birthday by sharing the Top 5 hits from the year I was born: 1982.

Ugh.  If you're doing your math, that means that I will be 32 tomorrow.

#5 "Centerfold" by J. Geils Band

#4 "Ebony and Ivory" by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder

#3 "I Love Rock N' Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

#2 "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor

# "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John

Those are definitely some good songs from 1982! :)

What song was #1 the year YOU were born??

Live & Learn Thursday: A Guide to Giving

I am so excited to share with you all that I've been contacted for my first real blogging collaboration!  I was contacted by Treat (a division of Shutterfly), and I was given the opportunity to start creating.  Treat is a company that offers personalized cards and gifts for lots of occasions!

April is a big birthday month in my family, and one of those birthdays is my little brother!  Sometimes, I just don't know what to get that kid.  So this was a fun opportunity! I decided to create a personalized birthday card and mug!

There were many designs and styles to choose from, and there are even some where you can add your own photos for an even MORE personal touch.  You can also choose to have a paper card delivered to your recipient or send a card digitally.  (This card even gave me the option to add a gift card!)

Here's the one I created:

This is actually a picture of my brother and I from when we were kids!  Underneath, the text reads "just for you/from your big sister".
So really, ladies, the next big question is: What on earth do you buy for the guy in your life?  Be it a brother, spouse, dad, boyfriend, uncle, grandpa, you name it.  Guys can be hard to shop for.  As I said, I created a mug on Treat, as well.  (Hey, guys like hot beverages, too!)

I've also got a few more ideas:
  • Gift card to his favorite restaurant: Let's face it.  Most guys like to eat and don't or can't cook.  Why not give him the chance to treat himself?  From good ol' McDonald's to even something fancy.  I'm sure he will be grateful (or at least his stomach will).
  • Video games: Both my brother and my husband spend some good quality time with their PlayStations.  Find out what he's playing and snag up the newest version of the game!
  • Clothes: Unless he's super picky, the men in your life often can use some guidance in the area of fashion.  I'm convinced that my dad would still be wearing his sweaters from the 80s if I didn't buy him a new one almost every Christmas.
  • A "mix tape": Ok, it might not be 1990-something any more, but this can take the form of a CD or MP3 playlist.  The idea is still the same: take some songs that you love/he loves/are special to both of you and put them all together for him.  It's affordable and meaningful.  It's a win-win!
  • Tickets to a sporting event: If the guy you're shopping for is into sports, he will think you're the best person ever if you get him tickets to see his favorite team play!
I also created a "Gifts for Guys" Board on Pinterest!  Would you like to add pins to my board?  Shoot me an e-mail (or mention it in your comment), and I'll add you to the board!  It would be fun for all of us to come up with some ideas together!  You can check out what I've found so far here.

What are your go-to gifts for the guys in your life?

Happies & Crappies- 1/24

I was going to title this post "Friday Facts," but then I remembered that Amber co-hosts "Happies & Crappies" on Fridays, and it gave me an even better reason to write today!

Happies
~We had an in-service day on Monday, a two-hour delay on Wednesday, and a two-hour delay today!  I will never complain about extra sleep.

~Today is Scott's birthday!!  I doubt he'll actually read this (so I'll be sure to tell him in person), but Happy Birthday, Baby! :)

This is us with our friend Jen on New Year's Eve!
~I started sponsoring Scattered Seashells, and my sponsorship with Poppiness will begin on February 1st!

Poppiness

~I have a giveaway going to win an ad spot on MY blog!  You should totally go enter

~I drank a delicious cup of Godiva hot chocolate last night.  :)

Crappies
~Those lovely extra hours of sleep from the happies were caused by FRIGID temps here in PA!

~I have been in a panicked state driving to and from work every day this week.  God bless the people who get stuck behind me.  I drive as slow as a 90-year-old lady when the weather is like this.  I've been abnormally paranoid and terrified this week, too.  I was gripping the steering wheel so tight on my way home yesterday that my hands hurt by the time I got home!

~I've had headaches off and on this week.  I can't tell if it's the weather, sinuses, too tired, or if I'm a bit dehydrated.  I've been pretty thirsty, too....
What's been happening with you this week??

Happy.....

...Labor Day!

Guess what else today is??

It's also my birthday.  We'll pretend that I'm not turning 31 today.

This picture is unrelated to my actual birthday, but it's a cute picture of me not being 31. :-p

Ok, we won't.  Because I'm about to share 31 random things about myself (in no sensible order) in honor of my 31st birthday.  They may be things that you already know, but there may be new information.  So here goes:

1. I am a TV junkie.  I can't help myself.  There's so much good stuff to watch out there.  I actually get stressed out during the school year because I don't have all the time in the world to sit around watching my shows.  I get behind and the DVR gets cluttered, and I just can't take the pressure.  BUT I simply can't cut any shows out of my life.

2. Speaking of which, USA network is having an NCIS marathon for my birthday Labor Day.  It's one of those shows that I can watch over and over and over and never get tired of.  I'm very happy about this.  It's the best birthday present they could give me.

3. I am constantly craving cookies, but we never seem to have any here in the house.  I'm also too lazy to make them.  This is probably a good thing.

4. I am taking the "Skirtember" challenge with Kristin from Kristin's kNook and Chantal from Scattered Seashells.

5. I still have and sleep with my baby blanket.  Blankie and I have clearly had a long relationship.  I don't plan to give it up any time soon.

6. I love singing.  Like, down to my very core.  When I don't know what to say or how to say something, when I'm in a bad mood, when I'm in a good mood, singing is just how I know how to be.

7.  I posted my very first YouTube video.  It is a video of me singing.  It is not the best sample of what I can do, and my piano playing skills are only so-so.  I decided to grab my old music books from church and play through some songs.  These ones struck me in such a way that I was compelled to record and post.

8. My favorite colors are purple and pink.

9. I believe that chocolate and peanut butter are the best combination known to man....or woman, as the case may be.

10. I believe in God and am thankful for the unconditional love and forgiveness He offers.

11. I am excited for the My Harry Potter Fix link up I host with Kim at Latte & a Prayer and Tarole from One Haole Girl to start back up!  (Coming WEDNESDAY!)

12. I love reading.  My favorite genre is Historical Fiction (Philippa Gregory, anyone?), and apparently, I also like Teen Fantasy: Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent, Insurgent....

13. I don't like the number 13.  I refuse to ever have the volume on my TV or car radio set to 13.  I am somewhat convinced that something bad will happen if I have it set there.

14. I think I need to Tweet more.

15. My cats Allie and Abbie are my babies.  :)

16. I am a procrastinator.  I don't mean to be.  It just happens.

17. I have one brother.  He's pretty cool...sometimes.  ;)

18. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.

19.  I think I have a friend curse.  Most of my friends from high school and college don't live near me any more.  It seems that every time I make a new friend, she lives no where near me and/or moves away.  lol

20.  Candy Crush and Gardens of Time are two of my favorite games on my iPad.

21. Teaching 6th grade is off to a decent start.  Once I start teaching actual content, I think I'm really going to love it.

22. The team I'm on with Celebrating Home started a layaway program.  Once a month until next August, 12 of us pay $40.  A winner is drawn each month.  The winner gets to order $400 worth of merchandise (with the remaining $80 to cover tax, shipping, & fees) PLUS the hostess benefits for the month.  I won for August, so I got 40% free instead of 20%.  (That was $160 free!)  Here's my haul:

23.  My husband's name is Scott.  I like him.  :)

24.  I currently have a love/hate relationship with Season 15 of Big Brother right now.  I love it, but some of the contests are really awful people.  I wish they weren't still there.

25. My cousins are like my brothers and sisters.

26. Writing this list is harder and taking longer than I thought....

27. I actually cooked something new on Sunday.  I will share on the blog soon.

28.  Thank God for Pinterest.

29.  I bought two pairs of boots from Target.com for less than $70!  I had to throw away some boots that were worn out.  I feel that I should have a high heeled pair and flat pair in black, brown, and gray.  Still working on the gray...

30. Last year, I turned 30.  I found it kind of devastating.

31.  31 isn't much better.  :-p
