It's Ok Thursday 3/14

It's time for another edition of "It's Ok Thursdays".  I figured I'd get this post written before the students arrive.  It is my hope that this Thursday is MUCH better than the last.

It's ok...to stay up later than usual to pamper yourself.  I totally took a luxurious shower, used my new warming foot scrub from Julep (review to come), and painted my nails.

It's ok...if you can think of nothing else but spring.  I am READY for warm weather!!

It's ok...to be frustrated with your job.  We all have these days....months....years.  Whichever.  I'm thankful for my job, but I'm just frustrated right now.  I hope you'll all bear with me until summer rolls around.  :)

It's ok...that I'm super excited my friend Joan is coming for a visit on Saturday.  She's bringing her baby along, and I can't wait to see them both!  I haven't seen them since baby Abby was a little over a week old in September!

It's ok...that the above list is all that I have time for today.  The students are arriving!

Have a great Thursday, everyone! :)

My Harry Potter Fix: Week 22

Just a reminder of the link-up rules:
Grab the button, follow your hosts & co-hosts: Kim, Tarole, Erinn, & Me, link back to us somehow, and most importantly....post about Harry Potter!

This week we're talking Harry Potter memoribilia.  What do you have?  What do you want?

I have nothing.

Just my books and movies.

So here's what I want:

Untitled #11

I  almost bought a wand at the Harry Potter exhibit that I went to in NYC in February.  I just didn't think that I could justify that purchase to my husband....I am also jealous that Kim has that shirt! :)

If I ever get brave enough to get a tattoo, it will be this quote.

I can't wait to see your HP items!

Next Week's Questions: If you were at Hogwarts....
1. Assuming you were sorted in Harry's year, which character do you think would be your best friend? Why?
2. Which season at Hogwarts would be your favorite?
3. What class do you think you'd excel in most?
4. Would you be involved in any extra-curricular activities at Hogwarts?

We will have a special co-host next week, so stay tuned!

On Being a Teacher...

Surprisingly enough, my life is not just about blogging.

As many of you know, I am a teacher.  I've been having a difficult year this year, but I do genuinely love my job.  I've been thinking about writing this post for awhile now, and today seems like a good time to share some things about my job that people sometimes look down on.

1. Snow Days, 2 Hour Delays, Early Dismissals
It is a fact of winter in Pennsylvania that we will have snow.  When this occurs, it is sometimes necessary to cancel, delay, or dimiss school early.  Let me assure you, that this has nothing to do with the safety of the teachers and/or staff.  It is about the safety of the students.  Sure, our grandparents may have walked to school, uphill both ways, barefoot through the snow, but the reality of today's society is that most children have to ride the bus to school.  At my school district, EVERY student...even the ones who live across the street ride the bus to the school.  If we have an in-service day, and the weather is bad, they will not cancel for just the teachers.  Please don't criticize me because I don't have to drive to work in the snow.  I don't make that decision.

2. Summer Vacation
True, this is a perk of my job.  I love that I get to enjoy the warm summer months without having to go to work.  But please don't belittle me or my job because I have the summer off.  Also, keep in mind that many teachers work a summer job (or a part-time job all year) to make ends meet.

3. Contrary to popular belief, I do NOT have eyes in the back of my head.
I know that your child is a precious being.  I do and will do everything in my power to make them feel loved and safe and to teach them as much as I can.  But if Johnny pushes Sally, and Sally doesn't tell me about it, I can't give Johnny any consequences.  As a parent, are you on top of your children 24/7?  If you have that kind of time, PLEASE, come volunteer in my classroom, I would LOVE a second pair of eyes.

4. I am in charge of 16 + kids.  How many do you have again?
Unless you're the Duggars, the answer is probably less than 16.  Again, I cannot see or hear everything.  I can only do my best to teach your child how to be respectful of others.  You are welcome to do the same.

5. Come walk one day in my shoes.
If they're heels, this may not be a very comfortable day for you.  I would like you to plan lessons, make copies, keep organized, decorate for the current month, take down a bulletin board, put up a bulletin board, plan the seating chart where Johnny, Jenny, Sally, and Joe CAN'T sit together, hand in reports, attend meetings because of which you lose your time to do all of the above, TEACH, help this struggling student, find something enriching for this advanced student, keep the on-target students on track, keep in touch with parents, and only use the bathroom once....on your 30 minute lunch.

Then we'll talk.

Again, I do love my job.

T.G.I.F

Ok friends, after my angry venting post yesterday, I thought I should give you some positive thoughts.

And, I thought I could use some positive thoughts, too.

So I decided to share some things that are making me happy right now.

In no particular order....

  1. Today is the pajama day that my class earned for collecting Box Tops.  (And I earned it too because I put in over 200...lol)
  2. We will also be served hot chocolate this morning.  Mmmm...
  3. Reading blogs.  I really love keeping up on the details of your lives and what's going on with you.
  4. My husband.  He may drive me crazy at times, but I really love him so much.

     5. Celebrating Home I was so tired last night, but even after my awful day, I found myself up late
working on things for my business.  I LOVE it!
     6. My cats, Allie & Abbie.  They're so sweet.  :)
     7. It is Friday.  Thank the good Lord.
     8. It's supposed to be in the 50s this weekend.  Scott & I might break out the motorcycle on
Sunday, don our leather jackets, and go for a ride.

It's Ok Thursday 3/7

Ok friends, I am going to apologize in advance.  My "It's Ok Thursdays" post today is going to be about some things that are NOT ok because, well...THAT's the kind of day I'm having today.

This week it is NOT ok...

...to cancel an observation of a lesson RIGHT BEFORE it happens.  The fact that it is necessary for me to meet with you a week in advance to share my lesson, hop around this chapter like a crazy person thanks to the weather and other circumstances that have been interfering, AND keep my students on track for the year has really been easy.  I'm so sorry that things weren't convenient for you today.

...to ignore the fact that your child needs help.  Your child's uncontrollable outbursts are not in any way helping the rest of my students to learn and stay on task.

...to not let me do my job. I'm sorry that you are in denial.  But not allowing me to help your child is not good for anyone in this classroom.

...that winter is not over yet.  I need warm weather.  I NEED summer vacation.  My sanity is slowly slipping away......

...that we have to set the clocks ahead one hour this weekend.  I need my sleep, people.  Losing an hour doesn't make me very happy at all.

I hope you all enjoyed my angry, sarcastic post today.

Sorry that it's so negative, but I needed to get it off my chest.  I hope you will all forgive me.

My Harry Potter Fix: Week 21

Just a reminder of the link-up rules:
Grab the button, follow your hosts & co-hosts: Kim, Tarole, Erinn, & Me, link back to us somehow, and most importantly....post about Harry Potter!

This week, we're sharing our favorite Harry Potter GIFs.  SO fun! :)

This is how I feel as a teacher right now.  It's best to pretend that I don't exist than to address condescending parents.

I LOVE this scene.  It cracks me up every time.  :)

Haha.  Hermione could SO kick her butt!

Yes, Ron, we can.

Ok, it's not a GIF, but I found it while I was browsing, and it made me laugh.  I do love HP/Mean Girls humor.

Enough said. :)

Don't forget that we welcome your question ideas.  Submit them here.  Next week we'll be sharing the Harry Potter memorabilia that we own or (if you don't own any) our HP memorabilia wish lists.  It's going to be super fun!

Can't wait to see your GIFs! :)
